One Step Forward
by
Les Nubians
Album:
One Step Forward (+ Bonus DVD) (Pal/Rc-0
I'll call it Afro-French R&B. So seductive, so smooth, vocals of honey and a band of silk. This is one album that plays well very late at night. When you are not alone....
No One But You
by
Swing Out Sister
Album:
Kaleidescope World
Corinne Drewery is one of the great "unheard of" Divas. Yes, S.O.S is still recording after some 20 years. She sounds as great as ever! They've never made a bad album...honestly!
Candy
by
Big Maybelle
Album:
The Complete OKeh Sessions 1952-1955
I have a new Diva! Big Maybelle was a belter, a growler, and more. She had that rare voice that made one believe that she had seen a few things. One can hear what Rock&Roll borrowed from the Blues in this album.
Precious Memories
by
Aretha Franklin, James Cleveland, & The Southern California Community Choir
Album:
Jubilation! Great Gospel Performances Vol. I
Old time African American Gospel Music...the kind that got you into church and kept you there. Includes the classic "Oh Happy Day." If you get this album, play it LOUD! You'll be happy that you did. I'm glad I went through some boxes!
Naive Melody (This Must Be The Place)
by
Talking Heads
Album:
Stop Making Sense
One hot concert movie. Probably one of the best examples of a band at its height. They were tight and together for the taping of this show. Besides, it has one of my favorite songs, the Naive Melody.
Gypsy Acid Queen
by
The Who
Album:
Tommy (1969 Original Concept Album)
If you really sit and listen to this soundtrack, you can't help but realize that this is one strange story being told. The abuse, the awakening, the fall. All in Tommy.
Jacky
by
Marc Almond
Album:
Tenement Symphony
Everyone shold hear Jacky at least once. It is one of the few times tha Almond drops his troubadour disguise and peeks out at you from behind that mask. Those who know his history will recognize what he is doing quick enough.
For the Love of Big Brother
by
Eurythmics
Album:
1984 (For the Love of Big Brother)
This obscure beauty is a perfect late night, foul mood album. One of the darkest things to come from the Eurythmics. You should read "1984" by Orwell before hearing the album, especially before you hear "Room 101."
Sensation
by
Bryan Ferry
Album:
Boys and Girls
I just bought my third copy of this album on cd. Its all about that voice. Probably one of the best arrangement of music he has done, and one of the few examples of how the "wall of sound" can be made lush and sensual.
Everyday crime
by
Swing Out Sister
Album:
Get in Touch with Yourself
One of those albums that I listen to at least once a month. Rich in sound and the voice is matched with passion and the music. Probably their best album...so far.
4 U
by
Vesta
Album:
Vesta 4 U
R & B from 1988. She is as perky and straight-up then as she is now. She is both cheeky and tender on this album. Yes, it has aged somewhat, but those who know Vesta understand that you listen for message as well as the voice!
My first, my last, my everything.
by
Barry White
Album:
Greates Hits
He was magnificent! The "Walrus of Love" was his nickname. He has to be responsible for many people being here today! I'm still mourning his passing. With the deaths of Barry White and Lou Rawls, only one member of the"Holy Trinity of the Bass" is alive, Isaac Hayes.
Down to my last cigarette
by
k.d. lang
Album:
Shadowland
The perfect album for warm weather. I rarely venture into Country and Western, but this album gets better with every passing year. The "Honky Tonk Angels" medley is a real treat, it features not only ms.lang, but Brenda Lee, Loretta Lynn and Kitty Wells, three of country music's legendary women singers, a real treat!
Take Your Time
by
Max-A-Million with 20 Fingers
Album:
20 Fingers Greatest Hits
If you find this album, buy it! "Cave Man" will tilt your wig!. The song about the chicken will blow the wig off! The album does recover after that song. One of the raumchiest party albums out there!
Laundromat Blues
by
Various
Album:
Risque Rhythm: Nasty 50's R&B
Song lyrics have always pushed the envelope. This collection of songs comes from a gentler era, when one had to be creative to avoid "frank" language. I'll provide three titles and you can guess what is on this album. "Big Long Slidin' Thing" by Dinah Washington. "60 Minute Man" by the Dominoes. "My man stands out", by Julia Lee & Her Boyfriends. One of the best party albums I've found.
At Last!
by
Etta James
Album:
At Last!
The voice! You never fail to believe her. One of my permanent top Divas !
Mass in G Major
by
Robert Shaw
Album:
Poulenc: Mass in G major; Motets
I get older and I discover new things. A good Sunday afternoon album...only on a warm breezy day. It is much like the Gregorian Chant, but warmer and more sensual. Oh yes, these are actual religious masses performed in the Church this day.
Twilight Zone
by
the Manhattan Transfer
Album:
Down in Birdland, the MT Anthology
They are actually that good. Video killed the radio star, and this group could prove it. They were together, tight, and too plush. You rarely hear singing like this anymore.
Lydia the Tatooed Lady
by
Groucho Marx
Album:
A Night at the Circus Soundtrack
An oldy but goody. If you just change out many of the consonants you will have one of the filthiest songs possible in the history of the English language!
Watching the Wild Life
by
Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Album:
Bang!...The Greatest Hits of Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Just getting in touch with a certain decade. As for watching the wild life, the members of the tribe only need to listen to it once and know exactly what the song is about!
Emergency on Planet Earth
by
Jamiroquai
Album:
Emergency on Planet Earth
Eclectic. Smooth and laid back with a message. The title song says it all.
So Happy
by
Cherrelle
Album:
Affair
Produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Yes I know it is straight from the Eighties, but this album still has kick!
